Hatterman's Hand. Installation at Master Artistic Research End Exhibition 2015 photo by Katarína Gališinová
Hatterman's hand, after Arbeider, Neger (1939). 2015
Selection of 15 from drawing study presented in three individual displays. Charcoal, pastel, acrylics on paper, MDF, primer, matt acryl.
120 x 150 x 50 cm and twice 130 x 170 x 50 cm.
In the Stedelijk Museum I became interested in the relation between Hatterman and one of her male models while looking at the painting originally titled Arbeider, Neger from 1939. (transl: Worker, Negro). Now renamed to David Cornelis Artist / Arbeider

I made thirty drawings of the painted hand and several of his torso and head. The drawing installation proposes a high intensity of looking and questions the authority of the three hands present (that of the model, the painter and my own) in different stages of history. The harsh blue-white colour of the passe-partouts troubles an all too comfortable view upon the work; especially a photo camera has difficulty grasping the right colours.
